Magistrates must participate in continuing professional education for as long as they serve. Their salaries are set by statute and are based on years of service as a Magistrate.

An Appeal against the decision of a Magistrate in civil proceedings must be commenced within 21 days of that decision. The appeal involves a rehearing of the original case on the material and evidence that were before the Magistrate. The Judge may allow further evidence to be filed, but only in exceptional circumstances and with the leave of the Court.
It is necessary for the appellant to show some error by the Magistrate.

However, once an error is established, the Judge can make any order that the Magistrate could have made. There will be an initial directions hearing before a Registrar of the District Court. Should the Appeal not be dismissed by the Registrar and when it is ready for the final hearing, it will be listed before a Judge. It will be the Judge's role to decide the application afresh based on all the evidence presented to the Magistrate, and any other evidence or information the Judge may decide to receive.

The magistrate has jurisdiction in civil cases, that is, in disputes between private individuals, and in criminal cases where infringement of the law of the country and a common law is committed. Those standing trial and found guilty, are convicted.
In the large centres the judicial duties of the magistrate are more specialised. They adjudicate in either civil, criminal courts or juvenile courts. Aministration function: In addition to judicial duties the magistrate also has many administrative tasks.

In addition to these requirements each university has its own entry requirements based on an admission point score APS. Degree: Prospective magistrates need to obtain at least a 3-year diploma or degree in law such as Diploma Luris, BLuris or a 4-year degree such as BProc.
